The Prophecy is an erotic paranormal romance novella by Nina Croft. It is book one in the Daughters of the Morrigan series. Raven has been cursed with a prophecy that has made passing her twenty-first birthday impossible, and time is quickly running out—sadly, just not quick enough for Raven herself. Kael rashly made the decision long ago that ending Raven’s life would be easier than saving her—that is until he laid eyes on her again. Enemies, lovers, and love are all the same thing when there’s a loophole, right?
For such a short amount of time, Raven’s growth is beautiful. I find Raven to be full of such longing, and not just for death and an end to a life full of fear and pain, but for so much more. She longs for a way out of the darkness she has been forced into; she longs for love and family, all of which have been stripped away from her, even if she does not fully realise it to begin with. She touched me with her pain and grief for a life she couldn’t imagine ever being able to live. Now this could make you think that she sounds a little sad to read about, and yes, she is a little bit, but she’s also funny, crude, strong, full of confidence in herself, and finally full of so much fire. She just doesn’t let these qualities show so fiercely. The rage from grief has her snapping, and her impatience made me smile because I absolutely agreed with her when she was quick to argue and snap at Kael. And especially when she muttered her annoyance when he wanted to take things slow, Kael, she’s waited long enough! But even after realising why she’s felt this desire to live that she kept it hidden away from even herself, she is brave enough to carry on with what life has cursed her with. Love is about making sacrifices, and Raven loves more than she thought was possible.
Kael makes me swoon. A man who not only admits his wrongdoings but also his feelings… she snapped up a good one. Or he sort of gave her an ultimatum that he immediately wasn’t going to follow through with, as if he could harm her in any way. Kael has hated witches for a long time, and with Raven being part witch and part vampire, you’d think he’d have some hatred towards her, but honestly, I think he was just angry with himself about the past. He has been alone for a very long time, and I think he resigned himself to thinking he would be forever until he laid eyes on a perfect “mess”—not the perfect first meeting, but one of the funniest I’ve read in a while. I loved the whole way he was trying to approach the topic of the loophole with such gentle wording; it made me smile, and then I laughed at Raven’s thoughts on it. I’m pretty sure she broke it down in layman’s terms just to see his reaction. I can’t forget to mention how much of a charmer Kael is with the ‘I’ll kill this guy for you and I’ll create a messy end for that one if you want.’ – honestly, I just love him for Raven. But seriously, for a big, scary guy, he is awfully sweet on Raven, and I love a secret cinnamon roll.
Naturally, the smut itself gets its own paragraph—the tension! I do not understand how this was only 75 pages because the tension slowly built as you waited for it to happen, wondering if it actually would. It was delectably long. Then, when chapter nine finally came around, you best believe I was echoing Raven’s thoughts, followed by an “It’s happening! It’s happening!”. I was invested; even though they were technically in a lot of danger, the whole scene felt romantic and, of course, hot. I’m a sucker for when an MMC tries to very sweetly go, ‘We will take this slowly, my dear lady’ and the FMC goes, ‘Absolutely not, lose that control right now’, in more elegant words, of course. So thank you, Nina Croft, for coming up with this beautiful couple and for creating the ending they deserved, because I was worried for a moment there.
I loved this book so much! Kael made me swoon, Raven made my heart ache, and not only was their chemistry electric, but their interactions made me chuckle. Raven is as impatient as Kael is cheeky, and I couldn’t help but smile. Honestly, there wasn’t a single thing I disliked about this novella. It was so beautifully paced that I’m sad I won’t get to see more of them both, but I just adored how The Prophecy ended. Therefore, I am rating Book 1 of the Daughters of the Morrigan, Five out of Five Stars.
I would recommend this sweet and spicy novella to those who love all things paranormal romance, who love the thrill of thrumming desire, a great prophecy that creates peril, clever smutty loopholes, a destined love, and pain so heartbreakingly sad that you call for that sweet HEA. The Prophecy was my first Nina Croft book, and it will not be the last. I cannot wait to read the second book in this series because this author has quickly become one of my favourites.
