REVIEW: Monster’s Find by Leann Ryans

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Monster’s Find is the first book in the Omegaverse series, Monsters in the Mountains, by Leann Ryans. Sasha is going into heat, which would normally be fine if she had an alpha, but the alphas of her village had just murdered her father, so she fled. Finally, hiding away in the mountain, she thought she was alone, and she thought she would be safe to make it through her first heat. But there are rumours of those that live in the mountains that, in her dazed flee, she forgot—or simply no longer cared to take notice of. What could be worse than the monsters in her village? What could be hiding in the dark?

I loved how much we were given of both characters in such a short amount of time. We got the reason for how Sasha ended up in the mountain alone without it feeling like a quick information dump; it flowed easily. I felt for how alone and scared Sasha was and just how desperate she was for relief from the heat that she had never planned to suffer through alone. And even though she needed that relief, she was still fiery before she gave in and took what was being offered to her. I even loved how quick her ‘oh, what have I done’ moment was after her inhibition figuratively flew out of the window as the heat became too much, to the moment when she realised that maybe that act of desperation and clawing need was the best choice she might have ever made and that her instincts were something she should listen to. This made me like Sasha even more.

The entry of Mel’ar made me grin; I was immediately like, this is the one, Sasha. Mel’ar had an almost cocky confidence in the way he entered the cave while also being respectful to Sasha, allowing her to determine if she would take what she desired and accept him, despite his craving intention to make her his. I also loved that Mel’ar was so worried that Sasha would say no and would admit that she had made a mistake. Even after it all, he was still worried she might say no to him. But Mel’ar has been searching for something that could be his—an omega that he never thought would happen—and she happened to walk into the mountains, and he found her. That sounds like fate to me. Also, I adored how Mel’ar, despite his appearance, seems to be so soft inside. I love the matching of these two characters because Sasha needs safety, but she never expected an alpha to be someone who could cherish her, and that’s exactly what Mel’ar wants to do.

I’ve read books that have had Omega/Alpha traits and loved them, but this was my first Omegaverse book, so I cannot say if this will be a common aspect to them, but the one part that caused me to lower my star rating was the chosen terminology. The words and description pulled me out of the book so much that I laughed a couple of times, which I imagine was not the intent of the author. I’m not trying to be picky because I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but, in my opinion, words such as ‘bottom’, ‘potent seed’, ‘goop’, and ‘glob’ are not sexy terminology and/or descriptions. I felt it would have been more impactful and kept me hooked on the scene if the words were the simple, crude ones I have come accustomed to when reading erotica.

Usually, a novella can leave me craving more or with unanswered questions, so I loved how much of a rounded story I was given in under 38 pages. I felt like I was able to easily connect with the main characters, and the ending made me go ‘aw’, especially the last line that I absolutely loved. I also found the spice-to-plot ratio a good balance. But as mentioned above, the only downfall was the terminology used by the author, which sadly pulled me out of the scene enough to laugh. Therefore, I will be rating Monster’s Find Four out of Five stars.

If you’re over eighteen and looking for a short and sexy read to help you through a book slump, Monster’s Find is a great choice. It has heat, it made me laugh (I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it still stands), it has a HEA, and I think it’s a great introduction to Omegaverse, being my first full dip into the genre. I loved the bond that was found between Mel’ar and Sasha, and I loved the sneak peek given into the next book in the Monsters of the Mountains series by Leann Ryans. If you want to snap this novella up, head over to the author’s website because it is free; alternatively, you can purchase it from Amazon. I’m looking forward to downloading book two, Monster’s Obsession, soon!
